Top 5 things to do in Aviemore in the snow

Whatever the weather there’s always something to do at Rothiemurchus, a year-round playground just 5 minutes from Aviemore we offer a variety of activities suitable for the whole family.  With winter fast approaching and snow on the forecast in the Cairngorms this weekend, now is the perfect time to start planning that winter break!

It’s a well-known and popular destination for winter sports, but a holiday in Aviemore offers many more activities than just skiing and snowboarding.  From exhilarating adventures to relaxing days out, here’s our top 5 things to do in Aviemore in the snow this winter.

Feed the Deer

Join one of our friendly Countryside Rangers to hand feed the Red Deer hinds on our deer farm. Suitable for all ages, this is one of our most popular activities!  After meeting your Ranger, you’ll follow him in your own car to the deer farm.  From there it’s a 15/20 minute walk to see the deer so you’ll need appropriate footwear and warm clothes.  Watch as the Ranger calls the deer and they come excitedly running through the snow towards you, they know you have food!  You’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal and hand feed these magnificent animals, don’t forget your camera!

Loch an Eilein

Stunning in spring, spectacular in summer, enchanting in autumn, MAGICAL in winter….  There’s no ‘best’ time to visit Loch an Eilein but there’s just something special about it in winter.  Maybe it’s the thick white blanket of snow making everything look fresh and clean, or the winter sun making the frozen edges of the loch glisten and sparkle or maybe it’s the perfect mirror reflection of the 13th century island castle in the still water… whatever it is, it’s an experience not to be missed!  Gather the family, take a walk around the loch and make memories to cherish for years to come.

Quad trekking

You could be forgiven for thinking of quad trekking as a summer activity; in fact it’s open year round and some might say even more fun in the snow!  Wrap up warm and get ready for an in inspiring adventure as your experienced guide leads you on a trek through the snow-covered pine forest.  Stop to admire the views of the surrounding winter mountain landscape as you go.  Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife and look out for our herd of Hairy Highland Coos – they too are out and about whatever the weather!

TreeZone

Climb high into a snow-covered canopy of trees and have a go on this tree top adventure playground.  TreeZone consists of two courses, the ‘Tree Creeper’ course is up to 20 feet off the ground and involves 12 different fun crossings. The ‘Buzzard’ course ranges from 20 to 40 feet off the ground and offers 23 testing challenges ending with an exhilarating zip wire to end.  Once you’ve completed a course head across the road to The Druie Cafe and treat yourself to a well-deserved hot chocolate to warm up.

Land Rover Tour

If walking in the snow is not for you, hop on board a Land Rover and let a friendly Countryside Ranger drive you around to see the sights instead.  Along with your Ranger you’ll explore the highlights of Rothiemurchus hearing the history and stories of this special place as you go.  You’ll visit Highland Cattle and Red Deer (which you can hand feed if you wish!), see and hear the tales of the ancient pine forest and Loch an Eilein and visit the grand buildings of the Doune house and farm.  You’ll be given binoculars and a cosy Rothiemurchus Tartan blanket to use during the tour and you’ll also be treated tea/coffee & biscuits.
