FAQs

What is Rothiemurchus?

Rothiemurchus is the area between the River Spey near Aviemore and the top of the Cairngorm Mountains; within it are thriving communities, farms forestry, lochs rivers, part of the ancient forest of Caledon and it lies at the heart of The Cairngorms National Park.   Rothiemurchus has been managed for nature and people by the Grant family for almost 500 years.  It is widely recognised for its exceptional scenery and includes a wide range of rare and threated birds, animals and plants, as well as ancient monuments and historic buildings.  You can experience Rothiemurchus through many outdoor activities which have been carefully chosen so you can enjoy this special place and help care for the wildlife as well as discover more about the wildlife, the stories, the people, the history and the Cairngorms National Park.

How much does it cost to visit the ‘Park’?

Within both Rothiemurchus and the Cairngorms National Park are some of the most important areas in Europe for rare or threatened species of native birds, animals and plants; visitors are welcomed to walk, run, bike and ride free and responsibly on the varied and extensive network of paths which take you through the most beautiful of these areas.  In Rothiemurchus, the paths, car parks, toilets and information are cared for by our visitors and the Grant family business, not the government or National Park. Any surpluses from the huge choice of outdoor activities which help you to enjoy this exceptional area, car parking charges and other commercial activities are used to support the expert teams who welcome visitors as well as those behind the scenes who support them.

Do we need to book activities and how far in advance?

Our activities run in set sessions and it is best to pre-book so you are not disappointed, particularly if you can only come on a certain day or time. The speed in which our sessions fill up is very much dependant on the time of year. See what activities we offer here.

CHARITY POLICY

Rothiemurchus policy is to prioritise support charities that specifically benefit or deliver services to people living and working in Badenoch and Strathspey.

We are delighted to be supporting ‘ Maggie’s Highlands’ and ‘Badenoch & Strathspey Foodbank’ as our main charities over the last three years.

Rothiemurchus receives numerous requests from organisations seeking support for worthwhile causes. We would love to support each and every one of these but as we are a business we need to ‘draw a line’.

We do however understand the challenges facing fundraisers and we have a Charity Policy to accommodate the high volume of requests in a way that is fair and manageable.

Selection of our main Charity(s):
We support up to two main Charities where all money raised from charity events and collection cans, will go to our selected Charity.

The period will run from 1st September each year for three years. Nominations for charities are to be submitted in writing to Johnnie Grant, The Dell Office, Inverdruie, Rothiemurchus, by Aviemore, PH22 1QP  Johnnie, James and Philippa will ask our team their view on applications, assess the nominations and decide on the successful charities.   The decision will be final; the choice of Charity will be posted on our web site. However, unsuccessful applicants will not receive reasons why they were not selected.

Requests will be considered from other organisations raising money for charity to collect money at various times throughout the year.

Donations:
Every year Rothiemurchus  will make available 12 hampers or vouchers, each to the value of £30, to local groups raising funds for local causes within a 20 mile radius from the Rothiemurchus Centre.  These will be restricted to 2 per quarter with an additional 4 being made available in the quarter October to December each year.
