Summer Holidays at Rothiemurchus

Located just outside Aviemore, in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, Rothiemurchus is the ideal place to keep kids and adults entertained this Summer.

With a whole host of outdoor activities on offer, whether you are looking for an exciting adventure or to unwind in the great outdoors we offer something for everyone.  We are passionate about enabling people to enjoy this special place, our activities are carefully designed with sustainable care in mind and by taking part in these activities you are helping to care for Rothiemurchus.

1. Something for the animal lovers:

We have a variety of Ranger-led activities that let you get up close to some iconic Scottish animals.  Hairy Coo Safari takes you to The Dell Farm just a few minutes drive from the Rothiemurchus Centre, where one of our friendly and knowledgeable rangers will introduce you to our herd of Highland Coos. Or how about a chance to Feed the Deer? They will be delighted to see you, especially as you will be given a handful of their favourite food! If you want to do both and learn more about the history of Rothiemurchus you can take our Land Rover tour, the minimum age for this tour is 12 due to booster seat requirements.

2. For the adventurous types:

Suitable for ages 7+ and 1.1m tall, Treezone Aerial Adventures is great fun for those who love to look down on the world from the heights of the pine forest.  Navigate your way through obstacles like the Fortress Gangplank, Postman’s Walk and Indiana Jones Bridge before flying down the zip wire to complete the course.
Quad Bike Trekking is for ages 12+, led by an experienced guide you will follow a network of off-road trails through the stunning landscape of Rothiemurchus, past our long-horn Highland cattle and perhaps even see a red squirrel or roe deer.
Family Rafting is a great introduction for those new to the water, an easy ‘float’ and paddle down the river suitable for ages 6+.  White Water Tubing and River Tubing is a bit more action packed!  Hang on to the handles as you run the rapids and shoot through gorges and jump into deep pools, an exciting adventure for ages 12+.

3. For those who want to learn something new or hone their skills:

The Fishery at Rothiemurchus has something to suit all ages and stages, from beginners lessons and the brand new I Caught My First Fish to fly loch fishing and River Spey permits. There is also the opportunity every Tuesday evening to go guided pike fishing on the shores of Loch an Eilein. Or why not test your aim at the Clay Target Shooting Range? Suitable for ages 12+, the Silver Clay Shooting Experience will provide you with the ideal introduction to clay shooting. Our instructors provide expert one-to-one tuition giving you the confidence to really enjoy this exciting sport. Lighter weight guns and low recoil cartridges are available so that everyone can have a great time, and before you know it you’ll be hitting more clays than you thought possible!

4. For people who love exploring nature:

There are lots of ways to explore the forests and lochs of Rothiemurchus. At the centre, our friendly staff will be able to provide you with a map and advice on the best walking routes. If you don’t fancy walking, you can hire a bike or even see Rothiemurchus from horseback. There are various packages available, suitable for beginners and the more experienced rider. Or how about canoeing on Loch an Eilein? The Loch is very sheltered and is the perfect place to relax, explore some wonderful Highland scenery and to chat with your guide and new found friends. Look out for wildlife, paddle around the ruined castle and hear tales of Jacobite plots and the notorious Wolf of Badenoch. Loch an Eilein canoe sessions consist of a safety brief, teaching of basic paddling skills, a couple of fun games for all ages and then a gentle exploration of the Loch and its amazing history.

5. For Foodies!

Rothiemurchus Centre was once the local school building for the children of Aviemore and Rothiemurchus, now it houses a wonderful cafe and unique shopping opportunities. Our fantastic Farm Shop sells Rothiemurchus raised beef and venison as well as a great selection of local and artisan produce, everything from cheese, jams and chutneys to chocolate, whisky and a range of popular Scottish Gins. The Druie Café is perfect for a spot of lunch or some locally roasted coffee and a home-baked cake!  Sit inside the charming Druie – an old classroom. Or sit outside in the ‘sit-oot-erie’ where, weather-dependent, there will be a barbeque selling our own beef burgers and venison sausages. Dogs are welcome in the sit-oot-erie.

We hope you have fun!
